Playing with marbles, or ‘Goli’ (Tamil term for marbles) used to be an immensely popular game amongst schoolboys.

Marbles are commonly made from glass and a game is best played in a sandpit or loose dirt. There are many variations and rules of game play, but in general, it is about boys pitting their skills against each other in order to win as many marbles from their opponents as possible. The amassed ‘prize’ marbles are a great source of pride as they showed that the owner is a very skillful player.
